First make sure your unit is seated properly on the base, both arrows on the unit and the base will be pointed the same direction. There are also notches on both parts to help install correctly. 

Place the unit on a level surface like a table and at a height where you can apply a slight pressure down while spinning the ring to help the threads catch.
